Overlooking Gwithian is the
Sandsifter, a great
music venue, acclaimed restaurant and bar, with
plentiful parking and outside seating, most definitely worth a visit. Onsite
at the Sandsifter is the Gwithian Academy of Surfing with top British
Surfing Association surfing and bodyboarding
coaches of national repute as well as being qualified lifeguards.
Surfboards, bodyboards and wetsuits are available to hire. A surfshop is on
the complex with the latest surfwear, surfboards, bodyboards and wetsuits to
ensure a great day surfing Gwithian.
In Hayle, just a couple of miles away
is Down The Line Surf Shop
crammed with one of the best selections of European and Australian custom
surfboards and bodyboards anywhere. Down The Line stock wetsuits, surfwear,
board accessories and a great selection of kayaks; in fact everything needed
to have a great day in the surf.
A must is the Jampot, a unique listed cafe and shop, situated in the Gwithian Towans with glorious views of all
the surf breaks. Sit and watch the surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers whilst enjoying some of Lynn's homemade food. Browse the
shop for cold drinks, ice cream and snacks. In fact, everything you need for the beach, including bodyboards and skin boards.
West Cornwall is one of the best areas for surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and bodyboarding. Gwithian, Porthmeor, Gwenver, Sennen, Praa Sands and Porthleven are all
within a few miles of each other yet facing in different directions, hence if you can't surf in one location, another is always available.
There are a number of less well known surf breaks dotted around this part of the coast.
Most surfbeaches have surfshops close by, where boardhire and wetsuit hire are available as well as bodyboard hire. Most also have surfschools.
Surfwear shops are abundant in West Cornwall most selling Animal,
Rip Curl, Quiksilver,
Billabong, Oakley,
O'Neill, Mambo and Reef to name but a few brands.
Nearly all surfshops sell wetsuits, steamers for winter and shorties for summer. Well known brands such as Gul, Billabong,
Quiksilver, Rip Curl, Bodyglove, Sola,
C-Skins and Xcel
are available including wetsuit boots, gloves and hoods.
Many surfshops sell surfboards and bodyboards including longboards, custom boards and performance shortboards imported from around the world. All the surfwear
shops sell surfboard accessories such as fins, surfboard leashes, deck grips, surfboard bags and bodyboard bags. There are also surfshops specialising in
kitesurfing, windsurfing and bodyboarding.
